A tragic incident has unfolded in Karnataka's Dharwad district, where a college student allegedly died by suicide following accusations of harassment by the police. In response, three policemen have been suspended, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Victim Identified as Aditya Myageri
The deceased has been identified as Aditya Myageri, a BSc student at a private college. He was among 18 students detained by the Vidyagiri police on April 25 during an anti-drug drive. Aditya, originally from Belur village in Bagalkot district, was residing with friends in a rented house in the Girinagar area of Dharwad city.
Details of the Incident
According to police, the 18 students were tested for ganja consumption. Aditya tested negative and was subsequently released, while some of his roommates tested positive. However, the victim's family alleged that despite testing negative, Aditya was subjected to harassment by the police. They further claimed that certain officers demanded Rs 2,000 to settle the matter and threatened him with legal action if the money was not paid. The family also stated that Aditya had called his mother asking for money, but she was unable to arrange it immediately.
Suicide and Police Action
On Monday night, Aditya was found dead by suicide at his rented accommodation, allegedly by hanging from a ceiling fan. Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar confirmed that an unnatural death case has been registered at the Vidyagiri police station. He also announced the suspension of three policemen and stated that a detailed investigation is underway.
The incident has raised serious questions about police conduct during anti-drug operations. The family's allegations of harassment and extortion are being thoroughly probed. The police department has assured strict action against any erring officials.
