Trichy: The Trichy district administration, along with stakeholders including Trichy Corporation, TNSTC, police, and the state highways department, held a meeting on Thursday to address the traffic chaos at Chathiram bus terminus. The discussion followed a field inspection on Wednesday to identify lapses.
Review Meeting Led by Collector
District collector Pratik Tayal conducted a review meeting at the collectorate on Thursday, attended by corporation commissioner Veer Pratap Singh. The focus was on resolving traffic bottlenecks caused by hundreds of mofussil buses connecting Trichy with neighboring towns and districts such as Ariyalur, Jayankondam, Perambalur, Thuraiyur, Karur, and Cuddalore. These buses stop on College Road and Chennai Trunk Road near the terminus, severely affecting vehicular movement towards Karur, Srirangam, and Thiruvanaikoil.
Proposed Solutions
Traffic police sources suggested that shifting mofussil buses to Panjapur KKBT could be a viable solution to decongest the terminus. Currently, all major roads connecting the bus terminus are occupied by TNSTC and private mofussil buses, while some city buses embark and disembark passengers outside the terminus. The state highways department was instructed to expedite the pending 2.6-kilometer-long Mallachipuram-Odathurai flyover, which would bypass the entire congestion zone around the terminus.
The collector directed officials to come up with practical solutions to prevent traffic bottlenecks around the terminus. These developments come after TOI reported the issue on June 9.
