The race for the Karnataka Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) post has narrowed down to two former bureaucrats. The state government is set to conduct interviews for the selection shortly.
Candidates in the Fray
The two candidates are retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers. One of them is a former chief secretary of the state, while the other is a former additional chief secretary. Both have extensive experience in governance and public administration.
Selection Process
The selection committee, headed by the Chief Minister, will interview the candidates. The committee also includes the Leader of the Opposition and a senior minister. The appointment is expected to be made soon after the interviews.
The Karnataka Information Commission is responsible for ensuring transparency and accountability in the state's public authorities under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The Chief Information Commissioner heads the commission and oversees its functioning.
Background
The post of CIC fell vacant after the previous commissioner completed his term. The government initiated the selection process to fill the vacancy. Several applications were received, and after scrutiny, the list was shortlisted to two candidates.
The new CIC will have a tenure of five years or until the age of 65, whichever is earlier. The commission has been active in addressing RTI appeals and complaints, and the new chief is expected to continue this work.
Both candidates have a clean track record and are known for their integrity and administrative skills. The decision is eagerly awaited by RTI activists and civil society groups.
