Over 200 AMMK Members Join AIADMK in Salem, EPS Welcomes Them
200+ AMMK Members Switch to AIADMK in Salem

In a significant boost for the AIADMK, the party witnessed a major influx of new members in Salem on Monday. More than 200 workers from the AMMK (Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam) in Thiruvarur district formally joined the ranks of the AIADMK, marking a notable consolidation of opposition forces in Tamil Nadu.

EPS Welcomes New Cadres with Traditional Shawls

The joining ceremony was held in the presence of AIADMK's general secretary and former Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). In a gesture of warm welcome, EPS personally adorned the new entrants with shawls, a traditional symbol of honour and acceptance in Tamil political culture. The event underscored the AIADMK's active efforts to strengthen its grassroots organization ahead of future electoral battles.

Key Figures Behind the Political Move

The merger was reportedly facilitated by a senior AIADMK leader from the region. R. Kamaraj, the AIADMK's Thiruvarur district secretary and a former minister, played an instrumental role in convincing the AMMK workers to cross over to the AIADMK. This move is seen as a strategic gain for the AIADMK in the fertile political landscape of the Cauvery delta region, from where the AMMK draws a considerable part of its support.

Unrelated Incident: Forest Department Aids Elephant Herd

In a separate incident highlighting human-wildlife interaction in the region, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department successfully intervened to protect both farmers and wildlife. Responding to concerns from local agriculturists, forest officials managed to safely chase away a herd of elephants that had ventured near human settlements.

The herd later crossed the Uddanapalli - Kelamangalam road in the early hours of Monday. To ensure the safe passage of the animals, the forest department officials temporarily halted vehicular traffic. "We stopped traffic for a few minutes to allow the elephants to cross the road," confirmed a forest department official, demonstrating proactive measures to prevent conflicts.

This political realignment in Salem signifies ongoing churn within Tamil Nadu's opposition space, with the AIADMK working to absorb smaller factions and consolidate its position as the principal challenger to the ruling DMK.
