21 Schoolchildren Injured as Van Overturns into Kerala Canal
In a distressing incident on Tuesday morning, at least 21 students sustained injuries after a van carrying schoolchildren overturned into a canal at Poovathoor near Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district. The accident occurred at Vandithadam in Kunnathukal panchayat around 9 am, when the vehicle lost control and plunged into the Muttakkavu canal.
Details of the Accident
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was transporting students to the LMS LP School, which is run by the CSI Church at Poovathoor. Since the school's regular bus was unavailable, authorities had arranged a vehicle from an external source to ferry the children. It was this hired vehicle that met with the accident while navigating a narrow stretch of road along the canal.
Witnesses at the scene described how the van veered off the road and toppled into the canal. Fortunately, the water level in the canal was relatively low at the time, which helped prevent a more severe tragedy. Despite this, 21 children were injured, with one student reported to be in serious condition. The ayah accompanying the children also suffered injuries in the incident.
Immediate Response and Rescue Efforts
Local residents quickly rushed to the scene upon hearing about the accident. They played a crucial role in pulling the trapped children out of the canal before emergency services could arrive. The injured were given first aid on-site and were subsequently shifted to medical facilities for further treatment.
The children were taken to the CSI Medical College Hospital in Karakonam and the Neyyattinkara district hospital. Hospital authorities have stated that most of the injured children are now out of danger, providing some relief amidst the chaos.

In response to the accident, the Parassala police have registered a case and launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact cause of the incident. Authorities are examining factors such as road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver error to understand what led to the van losing control and overturning into the canal.
