Communal Tensions Erupt in Himachal's Chamba District

Six individuals have been apprehended by police authorities in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district following violent communal clashes that have gripped the region for two consecutive days. The situation remains tense as law enforcement continues its search for additional suspects involved in the incident that began on Wednesday.

Incident Sparks Public Outrage

The conflict reportedly originated when a group of youths from a particular community allegedly assaulted local youths in Surara Mohalla and made objectionable comments about the local deity. This action triggered widespread anger among residents, leading to escalating tensions throughout the area.

On Thursday, the situation intensified as people from one community gathered outside the local police post, raising slogans and blocking road access. The protesters demanded copies of the First Information Report (FIR) and called for the immediate arrest of all individuals involved in the initial altercation.

Police Response and Arrests

Law enforcement agencies have taken decisive action in response to the growing unrest. Six youths have been formally arrested in connection with the violent clashes between members of two communities at Surara locality. Police have also seized significant evidence, including one car and two motorcycles believed to be connected to the incident.

Police teams initiated their search operation shortly after midnight on Wednesday, utilizing CCTV footage and mobile phone location data to track down suspects. This technological approach led to the apprehension of two individuals from Mamun Chowk in Pathankot, who were allegedly attempting to flee in a white vehicle that has since been impounded.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Chamba, Vijay Kumar Saklani, confirmed the arrests and indicated that more arrests are likely as investigations progress. Interrogation of eyewitnesses and detained suspects continues as police work to resolve the situation completely.

Ongoing Protests and Community Response

The tension in Chamba manifested in multiple forms of public demonstration. Late Wednesday night, an enraged crowd surrounded the local police post, vandalizing property while demanding the arrest of those responsible for the initial incident.

Amid the escalating situation, ASP Chamba Hitesh Lakhanpal personally intervened, appealing for calm and assuring community members that arrests would be made promptly. While his intervention temporarily eased tensions, with crowds dispersing late Wednesday, protests resumed on Thursday morning with renewed sloganeering against police authorities.

Meanwhile, certain Hindu organizations staged additional protests at main Bazaar Chamba, echoing demands for the arrest of all suspects involved in the assault case. Police authorities report that several remaining suspects have switched off their mobile phones or are avoiding communication attempts, complicating efforts to locate them.

Law enforcement agencies have registered a formal case and intensified their investigation, conducting continuous raids to apprehend the remaining individuals connected to the incident. The situation in Chamba remains under close monitoring as authorities work to restore complete normalcy to the region.
