In a significant development for the Kodagu district, a substantial financial package has been earmarked for the crucial upgrade of its road infrastructure. Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda has announced that a special grant of ₹80 crore will be provided for the development of roads across the region.
Grant Awaits Final Nod, Work to Begin in January
The announcement came after the MLA reviewed the ongoing development work on State Highway-85, which is currently underway at a cost of ₹20 crore. Gowda clarified that the new ₹80 crore grant is in the process of being released through the public works department. The relevant file is currently pending the chief minister's approval. Once cleared, the grant is expected to be released by January, after which the extensive development work will commence.
Addressing Decades of Neglect on Key Highway
The funds are set to address long-pending public grievances, particularly concerning a specific stretch of State Highway-85. The road connecting Alekatte to Tholur Shettalli, including Koothi, has been a major pain point for residents and commuters. For decades, villagers have demanded the widening and proper maintenance of this narrow and poorly maintained corridor. The road had deteriorated badly, riddled with potholes, making travel difficult and unsafe.
A Step Towards Better Connectivity
This ₹80 crore infusion is poised to transform the connectivity landscape in Kodagu. The development project promises to not only repair the damaged sections but also widen the crucial highway, facilitating smoother and safer transportation for locals and boosting the region's overall infrastructure. The move is seen as a direct response to the persistent demands from the community, marking a proactive step by the local administration to improve essential public amenities.
