Punjab politics has intensified after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister Sanjeev Arora was sent to seven days of Enforcement Directorate (ED) remand in a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case. AAP leaders accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing central agencies like the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to pressure opposition leaders under what they termed 'Operation Lotus.' Meanwhile, the BJP hit back, alleging that the AAP is defending corruption and playing the victim card whenever legal action is taken against its leaders.
The ED action against Arora, who holds a key portfolio in the Punjab government, has sparked a political firestorm. AAP leaders, including party spokesperson and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, held a press conference where they claimed that the BJP is using central agencies to destabilize non-BJP state governments. 'This is a clear misuse of power. The ED is being weaponized to target opposition leaders ahead of elections,' said a senior AAP leader.
On the other hand, the BJP dismissed these allegations as baseless. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra stated, 'The AAP has a history of corruption, and whenever legal action is taken, they cry foul. The ED is acting independently based on evidence. The AAP should answer for its misdeeds instead of playing the victim.'
Political analysts believe this development could impact the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, where the AAP is seeking a second term. The party has previously faced ED raids on several of its leaders, including former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The BJP, however, maintains that the law is taking its course and that no one is above the law.
The case has also drawn attention to the broader issue of federalism and the alleged misuse of central agencies. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, have expressed solidarity with the AAP, calling for a joint protest against what they describe as 'the dictatorship of the BJP.'
As the remand proceedings continue, the political battle is expected to escalate, with both sides gearing up for a prolonged confrontation. The ED is likely to seek further custody of Arora to investigate the money trail in the PMLA case.
