AAP Sweeps Mohali Local Body Elections, Set to Form Councils

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) achieved a sweeping victory in the local body elections across Mohali district, securing a majority of seats in multiple municipal corporations and councils. The results, declared on Thursday after counting of votes cast on May 26, have strengthened AAP's hold on urban governance in the region.

Counting and Results Overview

Counting took place under tight security at various centers across the district. Results for 168 wards, including two uncontested seats, were declared. In the Municipal Corporation Mohali, AAP won 26 out of 49 wards declared (one ward result pending), comfortably crossing the majority mark. The Congress secured 12 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) four, BJP six, and independents four. Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed the peaceful conduct of the counting process.

Notable Victories

Congress candidate Baljit Kaur from Ward No. 37 recorded the highest victory margin in Mohali city with 882 votes. SAD's Ranjeet Kaur won Zirakpur Ward No. 20 by 996 votes, the district's biggest margin. In Nayagaon Ward No. 12, BJP's Navjot Singh won by 495 votes.

Zirakpur Municipal Council

AAP won a majority of 16 seats in the 31-member Zirakpur Municipal Council, exactly half the house. SAD secured six seats, BJP and Congress four each, and one independent won. AAP is set to form the council.

Nayagaon Municipal Council

BJP retained dominance by winning 16 of 21 wards. AAP and Congress won one each, while independents took three. BJP's strong voter base in the area remained intact.

Dera Bassi Municipal Council

AAP won 12 of 19 wards, including one unopposed. Congress got two, SAD three, and BJP two. AAP will form the council and appoint its president.

Kurali Municipal Council

A close contest saw AAP win six seats, Congress five, SAD and BJP one each, and independents four. Independents hold a key role in the council's power balance.

Lalru Municipal Council

AAP secured 12 of 17 wards, including one unopposed. Congress won two, SAD and BJP one each, and one independent. AAP has a clear majority.

Banur Municipal Council

AAP dominated with 10 of 13 wards. Congress won the remaining three. Other parties failed to win any seat.

Political circles speculate that Sarabjeet Singh Samana, son of AAP MLA Kulwant Singh, may become the next mayor of Mohali.
