Kolkata: Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Jadavpur University (JU) on Tuesday submitted a written request to the Vice-Chancellor, demanding the installation of full-body statues of Aurobindo Ghosh and Swami Vivekananda on the campus. The student organization believes that these statues would help instill values of nationalism and spiritual consciousness among students, and serve as a countermeasure against anti-national activities and the spread of Naxalism and Maoism on the campus.
Vice-Chancellor's Response
Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee acknowledged the demand, stating, "Aurobindo Ghosh was our first principal. His statue must be there. We will hold discussions." This indicates a positive inclination towards the proposal, with plans for further deliberation.
Background and Significance
Aurobindo Ghosh, a prominent philosopher, yogi, and nationalist, served as the first principal of Jadavpur University. Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in introducing Indian philosophies to the Western world, is revered for his teachings on spirituality and nationalism. The ABVP's demand aligns with their ongoing efforts to promote cultural and national pride among students.
The university administration is expected to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to reach a consensus on the matter. This development comes amid broader discussions on campus about preserving national heritage and addressing ideological influences.
