Kolkata: A day after Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee issued an open challenge for anyone to prove that he had violated the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) building regulations, state municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul asserted that it was Banerjee's responsibility to respond to the notices and provide clarifications, not the other way around.
Minister's Strong Response
'For 15 years, you were above the law. But not any more,' Paul stated on Saturday, emphasizing that the era of impunity was over. The KMC buildings department and the assessment department had sent notices to 17 properties allegedly owned or co-owned by Banerjee. Mayor Firhad Hakim acknowledged the issuance of the notices but clarified that he was neither aware nor required to know about such notices being sent.
Banerjee's Initial Reaction
Banerjee initially did not accept that notices had been sent to him. Paul questioned, 'Does he think himself to be above the law? For 15 years, you were above the law but not any more. Regarding this building of yours, it is being said that some portions were constructed without permission. You have to come to the office and clarify, like any other person. If you have valid papers and documents, there will be no action. There could be a mistake on our end.'
Paul further added, 'It is your responsibility to come and provide the clarification. If you think yourself to be a prince and that you won't do anything or say anything, we will take action.'
Banerjee's Challenge
When asked about the notices on Friday, Banerjee appeared irritated. He retorted, 'Those asking such questions should first ask the KMC buildings department which portions of the buildings are illegal. Once they answer, I will respond. Mark the illegal part and I will answer.'
The exchange highlights the ongoing political friction in Kolkata, with the ruling party demanding accountability from its own senior leaders. The KMC has yet to specify the exact nature of the violations, but the notices have sparked a war of words between Banerjee and the municipal authorities.
