Ahmedabad's Mayoral Legacy: A New Chapter Awaits in May
Ahmedabad is set to welcome a new mayor in May, marking another milestone in the city's rich civic history. Since the establishment of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 1950, the mayoral post has been held by 36 individuals over 76 years, each contributing to the city's governance and development.
Record-Holding Mayors: Longest and Shortest Tenures
The most notable figure in Ahmedabad's mayoral history is Chinubhai Chimanlal Sheth, who served as the city's first mayor and holds the record for the longest tenure. According to the AMC website, Sheth's service spanned a total of 3,504 days, equivalent to six years, one month, and 17 days, across three separate terms.
His initial term began on July 1, 1950, and lasted until August 18, 1956. He returned for a second term from May 4, 1957, to September 19, 1958, serving one year, five months, and 15 days. Sheth's third and final term ran from May 4, 1959, to May 4, 1961, adding two more years to his distinguished record.
Following Sheth, Krishnavadan Shankarlal Joshi is recognized as the second longest-serving mayor, with a cumulative tenure of 1,991 days over three terms. Joshi's first term commenced on January 11, 1972, and concluded on February 25, 1974, lasting two years, one month, and 14 days (776 days).
Interestingly, his second term was the shortest in AMC history, lasting only 61 days from January 10, 1976, to March 11 of the same year. Joshi's third term extended from May 10, 1977, to July 7, 1980, covering three years, one month, and 27 days.
Evolution of Mayoral Tenures and Political Shifts
An AMC official highlighted that initially, there were no restrictions on mayoral tenures, allowing councillors to serve up to five years. However, from 1991 to 2000, the system changed to one- or two-year terms, resulting in seven mayors during that period.
The political landscape significantly influenced mayoral appointments. When the Congress party gained power in 2000, Himmatsinh Patel was elected mayor, serving from October 16, 2000, to April 15, 2003. He was succeeded by Anisabegam Mirza, who held office from April 16, 2003, to October 15, 2005.
From 2005 to 2010, under BJP governance, Amit Shah served as mayor for the first two and a half years, followed by Kanaji Thakor for the remaining period. A pivotal change occurred when the state government introduced a 50% reservation for women, reserving the mayoral position for women for two and a half years.
This policy led to the election of Asit Vora as mayor from October 31, 2010, to April 30, 2013, and then Minakshi Patel until December 14, 2015. Subsequently, Gautam Shah served from April 14, 2015, to January 14, 2018, with Bijal Patel holding the post until December 13, 2020.
