AI Job Threat Warning: Telangana CM Unveils Vision-2047 Plan

Telangana Chief Minister Sounds Alarm on AI's Impact on Employment

Hyderabad: In a stark warning delivered during the state assembly session, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy cautioned that the swift advancement of artificial intelligence poses a significant threat to white-collar employment in the near future. Speaking on Wednesday while replying to the motion of thanks on the governor's address, Reddy emphasized that the government's newly unveiled Telangana Rising Vision-2047 blueprint is specifically crafted to help the state brace for this impending technological disruption.

Vision-2047: A Roadmap for Economic Resilience and Job Creation

The comprehensive vision document outlines a strategic plan to navigate the coming upheaval by generating new employment opportunities, particularly in blue-collar sectors, while simultaneously bolstering welfare and development initiatives. Reddy detailed that the plan sets ambitious economic targets, aiming to build a $1 trillion state economy by 2035 and escalate it to a $3 trillion economy by 2047. He stressed that governments failing to proactively plan for AI's disruptive impact would likely face severe public backlash.

The blueprint encompasses a broad roadmap addressing critical areas such as:

  • Sustainable urban development projects
  • Employment generation across various sectors
  • Environmental restoration and conservation efforts

Key Initiatives and Urban Renewal Projects

Among the flagship initiatives highlighted in the Vision-2047 document are the Musi river rejuvenation project and the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail network. The government also plans to implement the CURE, PURE, and RARE urban development programs, aiming to revive Hyderabad as a lake-rich, rock-preserving, and pollution-free city. Reddy asserted that these projects are essential for the state's long-term growth and environmental sustainability.

Political Confrontation and Assembly Debate

The chief minister used the assembly debate to launch a sharp critique against the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing the party of failing to recognize the government's long-term vision to rebuild the state and transform it into 'Bangaru Telangana' (Golden Telangana). He expressed disappointment that Leader of Opposition K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) did not attend the unveiling of the Telugu Thalli statue by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla.

Reddy further pointed out that KCR has drawn a salary of Rs 1.06 crore since December 1, 2023, despite not attending the assembly sessions. "There is a serious need to discuss and take a decision when public servants do not attend to their duties but draw salary. It has to be done some day," Reddy stated, urging KCR to participate in the House proceedings.

Musi River Project Controversy and Video Evidence

To counter opposition criticism of the Musi river rejuvenation project, Chief Minister Reddy played two video clips in the assembly. One clip featured former Chief Minister KCR stating that there were 28,000 illegal encroachments on nalas and water bodies, and that existing laws permitted authorities to demolish them without prior notice. The second clip showed K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), during his tenure as Municipal Administration Minister, advocating for the bulldozing of approximately 10,000 encroachments on the Musi riverbed.

Amid protests from BRS members who argued that playing video clips violated assembly traditions, Reddy clarified that he had obtained the speaker's permission. He accused the opposition of hypocrisy, noting that their stance had changed simply because the Congress government was now executing the project. "What was legal when KCR and KTR talked about bulldozing encroachments has now become illegal just because the Congress government is taking up the project?" Reddy questioned.

He emphasized that the Congress government has announced a comprehensive rehabilitation package for project-affected people, including alternate housing, job opportunities, schools, and a clean environment. Reddy also affirmed that the government is actively implementing the Congress party's six electoral guarantees, with the exception of one—apparently referring to the promised Rs 2,500 monthly financial assistance to women.

The chief minister's address underscored the urgent need for strategic planning to mitigate the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence on the job market, while simultaneously advancing Telangana's economic and developmental goals through the Vision-2047 framework.
