AIADMK Faces Fresh Rebellion Against Palaniswami Amid Electoral Setbacks
AIADMK Rebellion: Palaniswami Under Fire After Poll Losses

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is once again facing internal turmoil, with a fresh rebellion brewing against its current leader, Edappadi K Palaniswami. Senior party leaders, including C V Shanmugam and S P Velumani, have openly challenged Palaniswami's leadership, accusing him of betraying the party's core ideology and aligning with political rivals. This uprising comes on the heels of significant electoral setbacks for the party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where the AIADMK managed to secure only 47 seats compared to the DMK's 59 and the newly formed TVK's 108 seats.

Historical Pattern of Splits and Mergers

The AIADMK has a long history of factionalism, often triggered by succession battles following the demise of its dominant leaders. After the death of party founder M G Ramachandran (MGR) in 1987, a bitter power struggle ensued between Jayalalithaa and Janaki Ramachandran, leading to temporary splits and eventual mergers. Similarly, following Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, a three-way contest among O Panneerselvam, V K Sasikala, and Palaniswami resulted in a temporary merger of factions. Palaniswami eventually consolidated power after the 2021 elections, expelling Panneerselvam from the party. However, the current rebellion indicates that internal strife remains a persistent challenge for the AIADMK.

Current Rebellion and Its Implications

The ongoing rebellion is characterized by accusations that Palaniswami has strayed from the party's principles and made compromises with political opponents. The dissenting leaders have called for a return to the party's original ideology and a more inclusive decision-making process. This internal conflict could further weaken the AIADMK's position in Tamil Nadu politics, especially after its poor performance in the recent assembly elections. The party's historical ability to reunite after crises suggests that a resolution may be possible, but the current leadership faces an uphill battle to restore unity and regain voter confidence.
