AIADMK's Election Strategy: Veteran Leaders Take Center Stage in Tamil Nadu Polls
In a clear indication of its electoral approach, the AIADMK is heavily relying on its seasoned veterans to mount a robust challenge in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The party's second list of candidates, unveiled by general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday, reveals a significant emphasis on continuity and experience.
Renominations Highlight Focus on Stability
A total of 46 sitting MLAs, including 14 former ministers, have been renominated in this latest list, which covers 127 constituencies. This follows the first list of 23 candidates, where 21 were former ministers, underscoring the party's deliberate strategy to field experienced hands. Party functionaries explain that this move aims to consolidate the existing vote base and minimize internal dissent ahead of the polls, ensuring a unified front.
Candidate Breakdown and Notable Omissions
So far, the AIADMK has announced 150 candidates, including 17 women, with names for the remaining constituencies expected shortly. The party is likely to contest around 167 seats in total. Notably, the lists show only one Muslim candidate—S Syed Sultan Samsudeen from Palayamkottai—highlighting a limited diversity in representation.
Several prominent figures have been left out, sparking discussions within political circles. Former assembly Speaker P Dhanapal and former ministers Sevoor S Ramachandran and M Paranjothi have been denied tickets, while senior leader S Semmalai has opted out of the race. Dhanapal's son, D Lokesh Tamilselvan, joined the TVK in February, citing a lack of respect for his father within the party.
Key Contests and New Faces
Among the prominent nominees fielded again are former minister Pollachi Jayaraman from Pollachi, Thalavai Sundaram from Kanyakumari, and Udumalai Radhakrishnan from Udumalpet. In Bodinayakanur, deputy propaganda secretary V T Narayanswamy has been fielded, where former chief minister O Panneerselvam is expected to contest, setting up a high-stakes battle.
In Gobichettipalayam, where TVK chief coordinator K A Sengottaiyan is likely to run, the AIADMK has picked relatively lesser-known union secretary V B Prabhu, indicating a strategic choice. In Coimbatore, loyalists of former minister S P Velumani—Amman Arjunan, P R G Arun Kumar, and K R Jayaram—have been accommodated, reinforcing local alliances.
Balancing Experience with Fresh Talent
Party sources reveal that EPS has also given opportunities to 42 debutants, signaling an attempt to groom a new generation of leaders while retaining seasoned faces. A notable new entrant is Leema Rose, wife of lottery baron Santiago Martin, who has been fielded from Lalgudi after recently quitting the IJK to join AIADMK.
Meanwhile, the party is yet to announce candidates for most constituencies in Chennai, including chief minister M K Stalin's Kolathur seat, with only Royapuram being an exception. This delay suggests careful deliberation in key urban areas.
Overall, the AIADMK's candidate selection reflects a dual strategy: leveraging the credibility of its old guard to secure votes and introducing fresh faces to build for the future, all aimed at mounting a formidable challenge in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
