The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu has witnessed a significant reconciliation as rebel MLAs, led by former minister S.P. Velumani, have patched up with the Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) faction. Around 13 MLAs met EPS on Wednesday and later submitted a unity letter to the Assembly Speaker, signaling an end to the internal strife that had plagued the party for months.
Key Developments in the Reconciliation Process
The breakthrough came after senior leader C. Vijayabaskar withdrew his whip recognition request, a move that indicated a shift towards unity within the party. The rift had deepened earlier when rebel MLAs extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government during a floor test, causing a major embarrassment to the EPS leadership. However, the latest developments suggest that the party is now prioritizing internal stability ahead of upcoming political contests.
What Led to the Rift?
The AIADMK had been divided into two camps after the 2024 assembly elections, with Velumani and his supporters expressing dissatisfaction over the party's direction under EPS. The split became more pronounced when the rebels voted in favor of the TVK government during a confidence motion, leading to speculation about a possible merger with other parties. However, the recent unity talks have brought the factions back together.
Implications for Tamil Nadu Politics
The reunification is expected to strengthen the AIADMK's position as a key opposition force in the state. With the Speaker set to review the petitions related to the rebel MLAs, the party is now focusing on consolidating its base. Political analysts believe that this move could help the AIADMK present a united front against the ruling TVK and the DMK in future elections. The party's internal stability is seen as a crucial factor in regaining the trust of its cadre and allies.
In a statement, EPS thanked the returning MLAs and emphasized the importance of party unity. Velumani also expressed his commitment to the AIADMK's ideology and leadership. The reconciliation has been welcomed by party workers, who see it as a positive step towards reviving the party's fortunes in Tamil Nadu.
