AIADMK Candidate Leema Rose Martin Tops Wealth Chart in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
AIADMK's Lalgudi candidate Leema Rose Martin has been declared the richest contestant in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with her election affidavit revealing staggering assets worth approximately Rs 1,049.56 crore. The 58-year-old politician, who is the wife of prominent lottery businessman Santiago Martin, filed her nomination papers on Monday ahead of the April 23 polls.
Breakdown of Massive Wealth Portfolio
According to the detailed 159-page affidavit, Martin's wealth comprises movable assets valued at Rs 139.62 crore and immovable properties worth Rs 909.94 crore. This substantial portfolio places her significantly ahead of other high-net-worth candidates in the electoral race, including Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, who has declared assets exceeding Rs 603 crore.
Her immovable properties are distributed across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Tiruppur. Additionally, she owns agricultural holdings in Kerala and near New Delhi, demonstrating her extensive real estate investments beyond state boundaries.
Family Wealth and Political Connections
The affidavit reveals that Martin's annual income for the 2024-25 financial year stood at Rs 9.82 crore. Despite her substantial wealth, her educational qualification is listed as Class VI. The document further indicates her business interests span real estate, gaming, and the hospitality sector.
The wealth extends throughout her immediate family, with her husband Santiago Martin declaring movable assets worth Rs 3,262.01 crore and immovable assets valued at Rs 887.36 crore. Her son, Jose Charles Martin, who is contesting from Puducherry on a BJP ticket, has reported total assets exceeding Rs 664 crore. Meanwhile, her son-in-law, TVK Villivakkam candidate Aadhav Arjuna, has declared assets worth Rs 197 crore.
Modest Personal Vehicles Contrast with Vast Wealth
Interestingly, the affidavit notes that both Leema Rose Martin and her husband each own three TVS XL mopeds, presenting a modest personal transportation choice. Their vehicle collection also includes a Hyundai Creta and a Mahindra Thar, showcasing a blend of practicality and utility in their personal mobility options.
Legal Challenges and Pending Cases
Rose has disclosed four pending criminal cases against her, with a significant portion relating to proceedings initiated by the Income Tax Department. These cases involve the controversial transfer of tax assessments from Coimbatore to Kolkata, a move that she and her daughter, Daisy Martin Aadhav Arjuna, unsuccessfully challenged in the Madras High Court in late 2024.
As the wife of Santiago Martin, she has also been named in matters related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These investigations typically stem from the Enforcement Directorate's long-standing scrutiny of her husband's lottery business and alleged "proceeds of crime" totaling hundreds of crores. The cases are currently being handled in various jurisdictions, including specialized courts in Chennai and Kolkata.
High-Stakes Electoral Battle Ahead
The Lalgudi seat is expected to witness a high-profile contest as Tamil Nadu prepares for the April 23 polls, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. Martin's substantial wealth declaration adds an intriguing dimension to the electoral landscape, highlighting the intersection of business interests and political aspirations in the state's democratic process.
The comprehensive affidavit provides unprecedented transparency into the financial standing of political candidates, offering voters crucial information as they prepare to make their electoral decisions in what promises to be a closely watched assembly election.
