AIADMK's Salem Fortress Faces Stiff Challenge from DMK's Renewed Push

Early last month, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami confidently declared that Salem would always remain the party's unshakable fortress. However, the battle to retain this stronghold, which is also Palaniswami's home turf, has grown significantly tougher in recent weeks. The political landscape in Salem district is shifting, presenting multiple hurdles for the AIADMK as it prepares for the upcoming electoral contest.

DMK's Strategic Groundwork and Organizational Strengthening

The primary challenge stems from the DMK's renewed and vigorous push to improve its performance across the district. In the 2021 elections, when the DMK was in opposition and the AIADMK held power, the AIADMK front secured a dominant victory, winning 10 out of the 11 assembly seats in Salem. The roles have now reversed, with the DMK currently in government, potentially granting it a strategic advantage in terms of resources and visibility.

Stung by the previous defeat, the DMK has undertaken meticulous groundwork to fortify its presence at the grassroots level. Senior leader K N Nehru has been deputed as the in-charge of Salem, spearheading efforts to mobilize support and address local issues. Furthermore, the party has significantly bolstered its local leadership structure. North district secretary R Rajendran was appointed as the tourism minister, east district secretary S R Sivalingam was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and Salem West district secretary T M Selvaganapathy became a Lok Sabha MP in 2024. These promotions have undeniably strengthened the DMK's organizational base and enhanced its influence within the district.

Internal Splits Within PMK and Caste Dynamics

Another critical challenge arises from the internal split within the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), a key ally of the AIADMK. The AIADMK has allocated two of the 11 seats in Salem district to the PMK, recognizing the importance of caste-based voting blocs. Gounders, the dominant community to which Palaniswami belongs, form a major voting bloc in Salem, while vanniyars also constitute a sizeable section of the electorate.

However, unlike the unified front presented in 2021, the PMK is now divided. Salem West MLA R Arul is aligned with party founder S Ramadoss, while Mettur MLA S Sadasivam supports party president Anbumani Ramadoss. This internal rift could significantly affect caste consolidation, particularly in the Edappadi constituency itself, where vanniyar votes are crucial. The split may dilute the PMK's effectiveness as an ally and complicate the AIADMK's electoral calculations.

Discontent Among Allies and Emerging Threats

There is also growing concern within the AIADMK over discontent among other allies who were denied seats in Salem. According to a party functionary, the AMMK had actively sought the Veerapandi seat, while the BJP was keen on contesting from Salem North. Their disappointment could potentially lead to a lack of enthusiastic support or even passive resistance during the campaign period.

In addition, AIADMK leaders have pointed to a potential challenge from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). As observed in other parts of Tamil Nadu, there are apprehensions that youth votes may drift towards this party. This shift could adversely affect AIADMK's prospects, especially if these are votes that would otherwise have been cast against the DMK, thereby splitting the anti-incumbency sentiment.

Confident DMK Versus Optimistic AIADMK

On the other hand, the DMK remains confident about its chances in Salem. Party leaders believe that the AIADMK has weakened in the region over time due to various factors. A DMK functionary stated, "There is no anti-incumbency against us. Support for the DMK has only grown over the past five years due to our effective welfare measures and proactive governance."

Despite these challenges, AIADMK leaders remain optimistic. They are banking on Palaniswami's personal influence and the development initiatives he has championed in Salem to help the party overcome these obstacles. Salem urban district secretary A K S M Balu asserted, "EPS will overcome all the challenges and sweep Salem. His leadership and the tangible progress in the district will resonate with the voters."
