Amritsar Improvement Trust Launches Crackdown on Illegal Eatery Encroachments

In a targeted enforcement action, the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) carried out a partial crackdown on illegal encroachments at the bustling Novelty Chowk area on Thursday. The drive specifically focused on eateries and bakeries operating within the Nehru Shopping Complex in Amritsar, addressing long-standing public grievances.

Enforcement Drive Targets Public Space Violations

Acting under the directives of AIT Chairman Karamjit Singh Rintu, officials removed and seized items that were illegally placed in the corridor and parking areas of the complex. This action was aimed at establishments, including Heera Paneer Wala, Sardar Ji 3D Foods, and Bansal Bakery, which had extended their operations into public spaces, causing significant inconvenience to visitors.

According to officials, repeated complaints from the public highlighted that these encroachments were not only increasing over time but also contributing to severe traffic congestion at Novelty Chowk. During the drive, some items were confiscated by the AIT team, while certain shopkeepers voluntarily removed their belongings to comply with the enforcement measures.

Strict Warnings Issued to Prevent Future Violations

The AIT team issued a stern warning to the shopkeepers, emphasizing that any further encroachment would result in strict action, including the complete seizure of goods. This move underscores the trust's commitment to maintaining public order and hygiene in commercial areas.

Social activist Pawan Sharma, who had recently raised the issue in the public interest, commented on the situation. He noted that illegal encroachments and unhygienic conditions created by food outlets have been major factors exacerbating traffic problems at Novelty Chowk, calling for sustained efforts to address these challenges.

The enforcement drive at Nehru Shopping Complex is part of broader initiatives by the Amritsar Improvement Trust to curb illegal activities and improve urban infrastructure. By targeting specific violators, the AIT aims to set a precedent for compliance and ensure that public spaces remain accessible and safe for all residents and visitors in Amritsar.
