AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi Campaigns Among Tea Garden Workers in Khowang
In a strategic political move, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi took his election campaign to the tea gardens of Khowang in Dibrugarh district on Wednesday. Gogoi canvassed extensively among tea garden workers, making a compelling pitch for their votes in the newly formed Khowang assembly constituency.
Significant Show of Support from Tea Community
In a notable demonstration of backing, approximately 350 individuals from the tea community joined the AJP at a membership event held at the Sepon Tea Estate. Gogoi personally welcomed these new members, emphasizing his commitment to their cause.
"The tea garden workers have been systematically deprived of their rights and neglected for an extended period," Gogoi declared while addressing the gathering. "From inadequate wages to substandard working conditions, they have faced consistent neglect. I am here to provide them with a firm assurance that if elected, their welfare will be my foremost priority. Their persistent struggles will finally gain a voice in the legislative assembly. Khowang deserves a representative who genuinely comprehends the ethos of this land and its people."
Political Significance of Tea Garden Voters
The outreach to the tea community holds substantial political weight. Tea garden voters constitute approximately 46,000 individuals, representing around 29.5% of Khowang's total electorate of 157,363 voters. This makes them a decisive voting bloc that no candidate can afford to overlook.
The Ahom community, to which Gogoi belongs, accounts for a nearly equivalent share of about 49,000 voters, or roughly 31% of the total electorate. This demographic distribution sets the stage for a competitive electoral battle.
Four-Cornered Contest in Khowang
Khowang is poised for a four-cornered contest with multiple candidates vying for the seat:
- BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi: The former MLA of the now-abolished Moran Assembly seat, who is also from the Ahom community, creating direct competition between two Ahom candidates for community votes.
- JMM candidate Dr. Prabhakar Das
- Independent candidate Biju Dowarah: Formerly with the Congress, Dowarah chose to contest independently after the Congress decided to cede the Khowang seat to its ally AJP.
Notably, no candidate from the tea community is contesting from Khowang, potentially leaving this significant voter segment open to persuasion.
Personal and Political Litmus Test for Gogoi
For Lurinjyoti Gogoi, this election represents far more than a routine campaign—it serves as a crucial personal and political litmus test. Despite being the most recognizable face of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement in Assam, Gogoi has never secured victory in an assembly election.
In the 2021 polls, he contested simultaneously from both Duliajan and Naharkatia assembly seats but finished third in both constituencies, where the BJP ultimately triumphed. He garnered 24,192 votes in Duliajan and 25,232 votes in Naharkatia—respectable numbers that nevertheless fell short of victory.
Fresh Opportunity in Newly Carved Constituency
The Khowang seat, freshly carved out through delimitation, presents Gogoi with a renewed opportunity to translate his substantial mass appeal and political profile into tangible electoral success. With a Congress-AJP alliance ensuring he does not face direct competition from Congress, and with both the tea and Ahom vote blocs within reach, the electoral conditions appear more favorable compared to 2021.
This campaign effort underscores Gogoi's strategic focus on mobilizing key voter segments in a constituency where demographic dynamics could determine the electoral outcome.
