Alwar Tiger Reserve Controversy Erupts Over Critical Habitat Changes
In a dramatic development in Alwar, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully has leveled serious allegations against proposed modifications to the Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH) of the Sariska Tiger Reserve. Jully has branded the changes as a major scam orchestrated to favor hotel and mining corporations, igniting a fierce public confrontation.
Heated Exchange During Official Meeting
The controversy unfolded during a meeting held at the district collectorate auditorium on Wednesday. Jully directly questioned district collector Artika Shukla, Chief Conservator of Forests Sangram Singh, and Divisional Forest Officer Abhimanyu Saharan regarding the rationale behind the proposed CTH alterations.
"Are you changing the Critical Tiger Habitat to operate the mines in Tehla?" Jully demanded, according to reports. He expressed frustration, stating he sought clear explanations from the officials but received unsatisfactory answers. He further accused the officials of acting under pressure from Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma.
Villagers Clash with Opposition Leader
Jully's allegations provoked an immediate and angry response from villagers of the Tehla area, some of whom identified as Congress workers. As he exited the venue, approximately 30 villagers, led by Kamlesh Kumar Meena, surrounded him to voice their strong objections.
The villagers countered Jully's claims, asserting their support for the proposed CTH changes. They accused the opposition leader of spreading false information and creating unnecessary confusion. The villagers argued that the modifications would actually benefit local residents, citing past difficulties in even obtaining stones for house construction.
Scuffle Erupts, Police Intervention Required
The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical scuffle between Jully's supporters and people from nearby villages who backed the villagers' stance. The situation grew tense, necessitating intervention by local police to restore order and bring the altercation under control.
Jully Reiterates Allegations to Media
Following the tumultuous meeting, Tikaram Jully addressed the media and stood firmly by his accusations. He reiterated his position that the changes to the Sariska Tiger Reserve's Critical Tiger Habitat constitute a deliberate scam designed to benefit commercial mining and hotel interests at the potential expense of the protected ecosystem.
The incident highlights the deep divisions and high stakes surrounding environmental policy and land use in the region, pitting political allegations against local community assertions of developmental benefit.
