The fate of candidates contesting in the Ambala Municipal Corporation (MC) elections will be sealed in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) this Sunday, as the city gears up for a crucial civic poll. The elections, which are being held after a gap of several years, have witnessed intense campaigning by major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and regional outfits.
Polling Arrangements and Security
Authorities have made extensive arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections. A total of 1,200 polling personnel will be deployed across 244 polling stations in the city. Each polling station will be equipped with EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines to ensure transparency. Security has been tightened with the deployment of paramilitary forces and local police to prevent any untoward incidents.
Key Candidates and Constituencies
The Ambala MC comprises 20 wards, and the main contest is between the BJP and Congress. The BJP has fielded candidates in all wards, while the Congress has allied with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in some seats. Independent candidates are also in the fray, making the elections a multi-cornered contest. Prominent candidates include former mayor Shakti Rani Sharma (BJP) and Congress's Suresh Gupta.
Voter Turnout Expectations
Election officials expect a high voter turnout, given the enthusiasm among residents. In the last municipal elections, Ambala recorded a turnout of around 65%, but this time, the figure may cross 70% due to increased awareness campaigns by the Election Commission. The voting will take place from 7 AM to 6 PM, with ample arrangements for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Issues Dominating the Campaign
The campaign has revolved around local issues such as poor infrastructure, water supply, sanitation, and garbage disposal. Both major parties have promised to improve basic amenities if voted to power. The BJP has highlighted the central government's schemes, while the Congress has targeted the state government over its performance.
Counting and Results
Counting of votes will take place on Monday, and the results are expected to be declared by evening. The winning candidates will form the new municipal council, which will elect the mayor and deputy mayor.
