Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a sharp attack on the Left Front's long-standing governance in West Bengal, claiming that their rule was responsible for turning Kolkata into a 'slum city'. Speaking at an election rally, Shah asserted that decades of Left rule led to the city's decline and its current image. The remark has drawn an immediate and strong rebuttal from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is locked in a fierce electoral battle with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
TMC's Strong Reaction
The TMC rejected Shah's statement outright, calling it a deliberate insult to Kolkata and its residents. Party leaders accused the BJP of distorting the city's identity for political gain. TMC MP Derek O'Brien responded sharply, saying, 'How dare you?' and criticised the remark as deeply disrespectful to the people of Kolkata. The party further argued that the BJP's narrative is a desperate attempt to divert attention from its own failures.
Political Confrontation Intensifies
The incident has escalated the political confrontation between the BJP and TMC as campaigning gains momentum in West Bengal. Both parties are aggressively vying for votes, with the BJP focusing on issues of governance and development, while the TMC highlights its work in transforming the state. Shah's comment is seen as a strategic move to target the Left's legacy, but it has also given the TMC an opportunity to rally support by defending the city's image.
The exchange underscores the high stakes in the West Bengal elections, where every statement is scrutinised and used to mobilise voters. As the campaign heats up, more such clashes are expected between the two major contenders.
