Amit Shah Makes Direct Appeal to Kerala's Christian Voters During Easter
Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a significant political outreach to the Christian community in Kerala on Sunday, urging them to support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming elections. Speaking at a public meeting in Kolenchery, Ernakulam, while campaigning for T20 candidate Babu Divakaran, Shah delivered a message timed with the Easter celebrations.
"On the occasion of Easter, I appeal to brothers and sisters, especially followers of Jesus, to stand with the NDA and help build a prosperous Kerala," Shah declared to the gathered crowd. This direct appeal comes amid growing concerns within sections of the Christian community regarding proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, which have sparked discussions about religious freedom and regulatory frameworks.
Security and Governance: Central Themes of Shah's Pitch
The Home Minister emphasized the NDA's governance philosophy of "justice for all, appeasement of none" as a cornerstone of their approach. He pointed to the central government's firm action against the Popular Front of India for alleged anti-India activities as evidence of this commitment. In a sharp critique of Kerala's existing political fronts, Shah accused both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF) of opposing the ban on such organizations and maintaining questionable ties with outfits like the Social Democratic Party of India and Jamaat-e-Islami.
"Kerala is not safe under either front," Shah asserted, positioning the NDA as the alternative for security and stability. He further elaborated on this by referencing the Munambam land dispute, claiming that both fronts remained silent when the Waqf Board attempted to take over land belonging to local residents. "That is why the Waqf Amendment Bill was brought," he explained, adding that the UDF and LDF represent "two sides of the same coin" in their approach to such issues.
Political Allegations and Development Promises
Shah did not hold back in his criticism of Kerala's dominant political alliances. He alleged that the Congress-led UDF and CPM-led LDF engage in fierce competition within Kerala but conveniently align elsewhere in the country. "They are also at the forefront of corruption," he charged, contrasting them with what he described as the clean governance model of the NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
The Home Minister presented statistical evidence of the NDA's growing influence in Kerala, noting that their vote share increased from 14% in 2014 to 20% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with expectations of further growth. To bolster his development pitch, Shah made several concrete promises:
- Establishment of an AIIMS facility within two years if the NDA comes to power in Kerala
- Legal action against those allegedly involved in the Sabarimala gold misappropriation case
- Continued focus on national development policies adapted for Kerala's specific needs
Countering Opposition Narratives
Shah specifically targeted Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of merely rebranding centrally sponsored schemes without adding substantive value. He also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of spreading misinformation regarding fuel prices. "While fuel prices have risen globally, India has avoided rationing or disruptions due to the Centre's effective management," Shah countered, defending the government's economic policies.
The Home Minister further criticized a recent protest by Congress activists at an artificial intelligence summit in Delhi, suggesting it reflected the opposition's disruptive approach to governance and development initiatives.
Campaign Momentum Across Kerala
Later in the day, Shah addressed another public meeting in Kattakada, Thiruvananthapuram, where he reiterated similar charges against the LDF and UDF. Earlier on Sunday, he had conducted a vibrant roadshow in Beypore constituency in support of BJP candidate K P Prakash Babu.
The Beypore event drew significant attention, with hundreds of party workers and voters, including many women, lining both sides of the route to greet Shah. Traveling in an open jeep amid the rhythmic accompaniment of traditional panchavadyam music and colorful displays, Shah arrived around 11:20 AM, boarding the vehicle at Mathottam Junction. He waved enthusiastically to the crowd and showered flower petals on supporters gathered along the roadside.
The roadshow proceeded under tight security arrangements, with over 800 state police personnel, central forces, and revenue officials deployed to ensure safety. The event concluded in front of the Milma factory at Naduvattom, marking another successful campaign stop in what is shaping up to be a keenly contested constituency.
Beypore features a triangular contest this election season, with former MLA P V Anvar pitted against PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas, while BJP candidate Babu makes his third attempt at the seat. The BJP is focusing on consolidating and expanding its vote share in the constituency, with party leaders including BJP state general secretary M T Ramesh, national committee member K P Sreeshan Master, and BJP district general secretary M Suresh actively participating in the campaign efforts.
Shah's multi-pronged approach—combining direct community appeals, development promises, security assurances, and vigorous grassroots campaigning—reflects the NDA's comprehensive strategy to make significant electoral gains in Kerala, a state where they have been traditionally weaker but are now demonstrating growing momentum.
