Agra: A man accused of stalking and harassing female students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was arrested after allegedly scaling the wall of a girls’ hostel and attempting to molest a student. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, leading to a swift response from university authorities and police.
Details of the Incident
The accused, identified as Abdullah Fazlu (38), also known as Abdullah Khan, had reportedly been stalking a university student for nearly one-and-a-half months. On Sunday evening, he allegedly followed the student and her two friends near their residential hall and tried to molest them. The girls rushed inside the hostel, but the accused allegedly jumped over the boundary wall and entered the premises. After the students raised an alarm, the university’s proctorial team intervened and alerted the police.
Arrest and Seizure
Police arrived promptly and arrested the accused. A knife was seized from his possession. He was later sent to jail under relevant charges, including the Arms Act. Before being taken away by police on Sunday night, one of the students recorded a video of him and shared it with other girls, which later circulated among the student community.
University Complaint
In its complaint to the police, the university administration alleged that the accused had been stalking and harassing several female students for the past few days. The complaint stated, “When the students resisted his advances on Sunday evening, he allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with them before jumping into the hostel premises.” It also mentioned that the students suspected he was carrying a weapon, which he allegedly threw away while fleeing.
Police Statement
Civil Lines SHO Arun Kumar said, “A case was registered under section 75 of the BNS for sexual harassment, and the accused was arrested and sent to jail. Further investigation is underway.” The police are also examining the video recorded by the student to gather additional evidence.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of female students on campus. University authorities have assured that security measures will be reviewed and strengthened. Students have demanded stricter action against stalkers and better lighting and surveillance near hostels.
