PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has called upon the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to grant regular employment for home guards in the state. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Anbumani highlighted the crucial role played by home guards in maintaining law and order, especially during natural disasters and festivals.
Demand for Regularisation
Anbumani pointed out that home guards have been serving for years without job security or adequate benefits. He urged the government to regularise their services, providing them with permanent positions, pension, and other welfare measures. He also stressed that home guards should be given the same status as regular police personnel.
Current Situation
Currently, home guards in Tamil Nadu work on a daily wage basis, with no guarantee of employment. They often work in hazardous conditions, especially during floods and cyclones, without proper compensation. Anbumani noted that many home guards have been serving for over two decades without any promotion or increment in salary.
Previous Appeals
This is not the first time Anbumani has raised this issue. He had previously written to the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police, seeking immediate action. However, no concrete steps have been taken so far. He expressed disappointment over the delay and urged the government to act promptly.
Welfare Measures
Anbumani also demanded that the government provide insurance coverage, medical benefits, and educational assistance for the children of home guards. He argued that these measures would boost the morale of the force and ensure better service to the public.
Role of Home Guards
Home guards assist the police in crowd control, traffic management, and patrolling. They also play a vital role during emergencies, such as natural disasters and communal clashes. Despite their importance, they remain one of the most neglected sections of the state's security apparatus.
Anbumani's appeal has garnered support from various quarters, including opposition parties and civil society groups. They have echoed his demand for regularisation and better working conditions for home guards.
