Andhra Pradesh Government Moves to Secure LPG Supply Amid Global Tensions
In response to growing public concern over potential disruptions to cooking gas availability, a high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) committee in Andhra Pradesh has issued a firm reassurance. The committee, specifically constituted to monitor the impact of the escalating Middle East crisis, stated unequivocally on Saturday that there is no cause for panic regarding Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies in the state.
Proactive Monitoring and Strategic Planning
The GoM, convening at the civil supplies corporation office, conducted a comprehensive review of the current LPG supply situation. This meeting followed a teleconference led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who directed ministers and senior officials to implement real-time monitoring and review mechanisms. The committee includes key figures such as Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav, Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, and Agriculture Minister K Atchennaidu.
Finance Minister Keshav emphasized the state government's commitment to minimizing the impact of the US-Iran conflict on the populace. "The state govt is doing everything it can to minimise the impact of the US-Iran war on people by addressing the short supply of LPG," he stated, highlighting a coordinated effort between state and central authorities to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain and reduce consumer inconvenience.
Combating Black Marketing and Ensuring Supply Integrity
During the review, the GoM, alongside representatives from major oil marketing companies (OMCs), scrutinized critical aspects of the supply chain:
- Current stock positions across distribution networks.
- Pending orders and fulfillment schedules.
- Anti-hoarding measures to curb black marketeering of gas cylinders.
Minister Keshav issued a stern warning against exploitation of the situation, declaring that stringent action would be taken against individuals or entities found hoarding cylinders or engaging in black market sales. "Strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to exploit the situation," he affirmed.
Implementing a Data-Driven and Technological Response
The committee has resolved to adopt a structured, data-centric approach to preempt any supply disruptions. Key operational measures already underway include:
- Establishment of dedicated control rooms at the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) centers and district collectorates to facilitate coordination and rapid response.
- Enhancement of OTP-based delivery systems and online booking platforms to streamline distribution and improve accessibility for consumers.
- Promotion of piped natural gas (PNG) as a viable alternative, building on successful pilot projects in cities like Vijayawada.
National Efforts to Boost Production and Stabilize Supply
Addressing initial disruptions in the supply chain attributed to the conflict, Keshav detailed concerted efforts at the national level. "The Union govt is taking steps to bring back normalcy and has been exploring alternative routes to restore the systems," he explained. In a significant move to augment domestic availability, refineries across India have been instructed to prioritize LPG production.
This strategic shift involves reducing the output of other petroleum products to increase gas production, with an anticipated boost in LPG supply by 10 to 20 percent. The minister underscored that the primary focus remains on securing uninterrupted supply for essential sectors, including households, hospitals, and student hostels.
Clarifying Booking Norms and Appealing for Public Calm
To manage demand systematically, existing cylinder booking regulations remain in force:
- Urban consumers are eligible for a refill once every 25 days.
- Rural consumers can book a refill once every 45 days.
- Consumers with double-cylinder connections have a 32-day interval between bookings.
Concluding his address, Minister Keshav made a heartfelt appeal to the public. He urged citizens not to succumb to rumors and reassured them of the government's sincere and dedicated efforts to alleviate any hardships and prevent economic losses. The combined vigilance of state and central authorities aims to navigate the challenges posed by international tensions while safeguarding the daily needs of Andhra Pradesh's residents.
