Andhra Pradesh Government Announces Major Housing and Urban Development Initiatives
In a significant announcement during the state assembly session on Thursday, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P Narayana revealed that the Andhra Pradesh government will distribute one lakh Tidco houses to beneficiaries on the occasion of Ugadi. Furthermore, all remaining pending houses under the scheme are slated for completion by June this year.
Comprehensive Urban Development Roadmap Unveiled
Speaking during the discussion on budget demands, Minister Narayana outlined the government's ambitious plans for urban development, drinking water supply, waste management, and housing infrastructure. He emphasized that the administration is moving forward with a clear and structured roadmap to ensure safe drinking water for all citizens across the state by the year 2028.
"The urban population in Andhra Pradesh is increasing at a rapid pace, having risen from 24.2% in 2001 to 36% at present. Projections indicate this figure will reach nearly 60% by 2047. In light of these demographic shifts, the government is formulating long-term infrastructure plans to adequately address the growing needs of our cities and towns," Narayana stated.
Substantial Budget Allocation for Municipal Administration
The minister disclosed that the current budget has allocated ₹14,539 crore for the municipal administration department, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. These funds will be strategically utilized to enhance critical urban services including drinking water supply, road networks, street lighting systems, and comprehensive solid and liquid waste management solutions.
Narayana provided detailed insights into the state's drinking water infrastructure, explaining that Andhra Pradesh currently supplies approximately 2,100 million liters per day (MLD) of drinking water through 38.48 lakh tap connections. However, an additional 16.5 lakh connections are required to meet future demand projections.
"To address this gap, tenders have been invited for projects that will supply an additional 941 MLD of drinking water. These initiatives will be implemented through various schemes including the Amrut programme, AIIB-funded projects, and the UIDF scheme, with a combined investment of nearly ₹11,937 crore," the minister elaborated.
Legacy Waste Management and Energy Conversion Initiatives
Minister Narayana addressed the challenging issue of accumulated waste, alleging that the previous administration left behind approximately 1.53 crore metric tonnes of legacy rubbish, including both above-ground and below-ground waste. The current government has already cleared 85 lakh metric tonnes of this legacy waste and plans to remove the remaining 68 lakh metric tonnes by June.
The state is actively expanding its waste-to-energy plant infrastructure to tackle this persistent problem. Existing facilities in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are already converting around 2,800 tonnes of waste into electricity daily. New plants are currently under development in Kakinada, Nellore, Kadapa, and Kurnool, with discussions underway to establish additional facilities in Vijayawada and Tirupati.
