BJP-supported candidates Anita Devi and Gurdeep Singh were elected unopposed as chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Hamirpur Zila Parishad on July 6, 2026. Anita Devi represents the Dhamrol ward, while Gurdeep Singh is the member from the Karer ward. Their election was unanimous after BJP-backed candidates secured 18 out of 19 seats in the Zila Parishad.
Unanimous election and victory rally
Anita Devi said she would work for the welfare and development of the district without political considerations. She thanked the BJP leadership, including former Chief Ministers Prem Kumar Dhumal and Jai Ram Thakur, state president Rajeev Bindal, MLAs Randhir Sharma, Ashish Sharma, and Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, former MLAs Vijay Agnihotri and Rajinder Rana, and district BJP workers for her victory.
BJP workers, led by party leaders and accompanied by the newly elected chairperson, vice-chairperson, and other Zila Parishad members, held a grand victory rally from the Zila Parishad building to Gandhi Chowk.
Political reactions
Randhir Sharma accused the Congress government of intentionally delaying the election to alter political equations and manipulate the situation in its favor through unethical means. He said the attempts failed and BJP-backed candidates secured both posts unopposed. Sharma added that the BJP's win of 18 out of 19 seats shows people are unhappy with the Congress government's performance, even in the district of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
