Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran on Thursday stated that the exit of former state president K. Annamalai is not a loss for the party. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Nagenthran emphasized that the BJP remains strong and united despite Annamalai's decision to launch his own political outfit.
Nagenthran's Remarks on Annamalai's Exit
Nagenthran said, 'Annamalai's exit is no loss for the party. In a democracy, everyone has the right to start their own political party. We wish him well in his future endeavors.' He added that the BJP's cadre base in Tamil Nadu is solid and that the party will continue to grow under his leadership.
Background of the Split
Annamalai, who served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president until early 2025, announced his resignation from the party in March 2026. He cited differences over organizational strategies and the party's approach to state politics. Following his exit, Annamalai revealed plans to form a new political party, tentatively named 'Tamil Nadu Vikas Party', with a focus on regional issues and youth empowerment.
Party's Response and Future Plans
The Tamil Nadu BJP has been working to consolidate its position ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Nagenthran confirmed that the party has already identified new leadership and is strengthening its grassroots network. 'We have a clear roadmap for the upcoming elections. Annamalai's departure will not affect our momentum,' he asserted.
Political Reactions
Meanwhile, opposition parties in the state have criticized the BJP's internal discord. The MDMK, a key ally of the DMK, commented that the split reflects the BJP's failure to maintain unity in Tamil Nadu. However, Nagenthran dismissed these remarks as 'baseless political propaganda'.
Annamalai has yet to respond to Nagenthran's latest comments. His new party is expected to be officially launched in July 2026, with a focus on anti-corruption and development agendas.
