COIMBATORE: Giant posters erected by supporters of former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai across Coimbatore have heightened political speculation that he may be gearing up to launch a new political movement. This comes amid reports of growing tensions with the BJP leadership.
Posters Appear Ahead of Birthday
The posters, featuring slogans such as “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us,” have been placed on major roads and streets in the city ahead of Annamalai’s birthday. The development coincides with increased discussions about his political future in Tamil Nadu political circles. BJP sources have confirmed that Annamalai is currently in Delhi.
Annamalai’s Political Journey
A former IPS officer, Annamalai joined the BJP in 2020 and served as the party’s Tamil Nadu president from 2021 to 2025. During his tenure, he became one of the party’s most prominent figures in the state, undertaking statewide campaigns and garnering significant support among youth and social media users.
Speculation Intensifies
Speculation about his next move intensified after the 2026 assembly elections, during which he was not fielded as a candidate in the Coimbatore assembly constituency, as per his wish. His recent criticism of the Centre’s decision to advance the implementation of the three-language policy for Class IX students has also fueled political debate. However, BJP leaders dismissed suggestions of a split, noting that Annamalai’s statewide prominence was built through the party and asserting that he remains aware of that fact.
Possible Scenarios
Interestingly, there is speculation that Annamalai could quit the BJP and contest the anticipated by-election from the Perundurai Assembly constituency, following the resignation of the sitting AIADMK MLA. Some observers believe he may seek a more prominent role within the BJP instead of launching a separate political outfit.
Rumours Persist
Rumours about Annamalai floating a new political party have gained traction since the conclusion of the 2026 Assembly elections. However, the former state BJP president has so far remained silent on the issue, neither confirming nor denying the reports, further fueling political speculation about his future course of action.
