Assam BJP Condemns Bangladesh Hindu Attacks, Cleric Held

In a strong statement addressing escalating communal tensions, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Assam unit, Dilip Saikia, has publicly condemned the recent atrocities against the Hindu community in neighbouring Bangladesh. The BJP leader issued a direct warning to the government in Dhaka, urging immediate action to ensure the security of religious minorities.

BJP Leader's Stern Warning to Bangladesh Government

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Dilip Saikia expressed grave concern over the violence. "The atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh must end immediately," Saikia stated emphatically. He described the killings as utterly condemnable and called for swift intervention.

Saikia's message carried a firm diplomatic warning. He asserted that the Bangladesh government must take responsibility for the safety and security of all its religious minorities, explicitly mentioning Hindus and Sikhs. Failure to do so, he cautioned, would lead to the issue being raised on international platforms, holding the authorities accountable before the world.

Assam Police Takes Action Against Support for Violence

Parallel to the political statements, law enforcement in Assam moved decisively against individuals allegedly endorsing the cross-border violence. In a significant development, police arrested a Muslim cleric, Bilal Ali, from the Darrang district. He was taken into custody for allegedly expressing support for the killing of a Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, in Bangladesh.

This arrest marks the second such case in the state within a short span. Earlier, on Tuesday, Assam police had detained Mohammad Shaif Akhtar Ali, a youth from Rangia. His arrest followed the posting of a controversial video on social media that appeared to justify the lynching of Das in Bangladesh. The police, after a thorough examination of the video content, proceeded with the arrest.

Appeal for Communal Harmony and Restraint

In light of these sensitive developments, the Assam police have issued a public appeal. They have urged citizens, particularly social media users, to exercise utmost restraint. The authorities have specifically requested the public to refrain from sharing or promoting any content that could potentially disturb the fragile communal harmony in the region.

The police action underscores a zero-tolerance approach towards content that incites violence or supports acts of aggression against any community, regardless of where such incidents occur. The dual approach of political diplomacy and domestic legal action highlights the sensitivity of the issue and its potential impact on social cohesion within Assam and bilateral relations with Bangladesh.
