Assam Chief Minister Announces Major Assembly Expansion Plan at Nazira Rally
In a significant political development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a major announcement during a high-stakes election rally in Nazira, located within the Sivasagar district, on Saturday. The Chief Minister declared that the total number of assembly seats in Assam could potentially increase by 63 in the foreseeable future, primarily due to the implementation of women's reservation policies.
Potential Assembly Seat Increase from 126 to 189
Addressing a substantial gathering of supporters who had assembled to back Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Mayur Borgohain, Chief Minister Sarma outlined the possibility of expanding the Assam Legislative Assembly from its current strength of 126 seats to a total of 189 seats. This represents a substantial increase of exactly 63 additional constituencies, which would mark one of the most significant structural changes to the state's political landscape in recent history.
The Chief Minister specifically linked this potential expansion to the implementation of women's reservation, indicating that the additional seats would be created to accommodate greater female representation in the state legislature. This announcement comes at a critical juncture, as Assam is currently engaged in a heated electoral battle with numerous high-profile contests underway across the state.
Promise to Revive Abolished Amguri Assembly Constituency
During his address, Chief Minister Sarma made a pointed and specific promise regarding the abolished Amguri assembly constituency, which was dissolved following the delimitation process. He assured the gathered crowd that if and when the additional 63 seats are added to the assembly, his administration would make concerted efforts to revive the Amguri constituency that currently no longer exists as an independent electoral unit.
"There is a definite possibility that 63 more seats will be added to the existing 126 Assam assembly seats because of women's reservation. And when that happens, we will try our best to revive the abolished Amguri Assembly seat once again," Sarma declared emphatically before the enthusiastic crowd.
Background on Amguri Constituency Dissolution
The Amguri constituency was formally dissolved as part of the delimitation process, with its territory divided between two neighboring constituencies. One portion was merged into the Sivasagar assembly constituency, while the remaining section became part of the Nazira constituency where Chief Minister Sarma was delivering his address.
Acknowledging the deep emotional connection that former residents of Amguri continue to maintain with their abolished constituency, the Chief Minister sought to reassure them with additional commitments. "After the delimitation process was completed, one part of the Amguri constituency went to Sivasagar and another part went to Nazira. The people of Amguri genuinely desire that their constituency should remain intact. But until we are able to revive it completely, no government offices from Amguri will be shifted elsewhere. Everything will remain exactly as it is currently. If circumstances permit, we will even establish one or two additional offices in Amguri," he elaborated.
High-Profile Nazira Electoral Contest
Turning his attention to the immediate electoral battle at hand, Chief Minister Sarma made a vigorous and compelling pitch for BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain, who is locked in a high-profile contest against sitting Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia. Saikia currently serves as the leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, making this particular contest especially significant and closely watched by political observers across the state.
The Chief Minister urged voters to strongly support Mayur Borgohain and extend the momentum of the BJP's governance record in Assam. He highlighted numerous achievements of the BJP government in the state and emphasized the advantages of what he described as a "double-engine government" – with the same political party holding power at both the state and central levels.
"The double-engine government has consistently delivered improved roads, comprehensive welfare schemes, and genuine transformation across all regions of Assam. Voting for Mayur Borgohain essentially means voting to continue this remarkable progress specifically in Nazira," Sarma asserted during his campaign address.
Strategic Importance of Nazira Constituency
The Nazira contest is being monitored as one of the most politically significant battles of the current election cycle in Assam, directly pitting the BJP's candidate against one of the Congress party's most prominent and recognizable faces in the state assembly. With the Chief Minister personally campaigning on the ground in Nazira, the BJP is clearly demonstrating that it is leaving absolutely nothing to chance in this prestigious and highly competitive seat.
Chief Minister Sarma's dual announcement regarding both the potential expansion of assembly seats and the promised revival of the Amguri constituency represents a strategic political maneuver designed to address both broader structural concerns and specific local grievances simultaneously. This approach underscores the complex interplay between state-level policy initiatives and constituency-specific electoral dynamics that characterize contemporary politics in Assam.
