Assam Chief Minister Accuses Congress of Exclusively Serving Bangladeshi 'Miyas'
In a series of fiery campaign rallies across Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress party, accusing it of working solely for Bangladeshi-origin immigrant Muslims, referred to as 'Miyas', while neglecting the state's indigenous populations. Speaking at back-to-back events in Dhemaji, Majuli, and Sadiya on Monday, Sarma asserted that the current harmony among diverse communities in Assam is a direct result of the BJP-led government's policies.
BJP's Political Strategy Against 'Miyas' Outlined
Sarma detailed what he described as the BJP's systematic approach to curbing the influence of Bangladeshi 'Miyas' in Assam's political landscape. "You can witness for yourself that since the BJP formed the government in the state, the Bangladeshi Miyas have been significantly reduced in stature," the Chief Minister declared. He elaborated on this political strategy, stating, "During this term, we politically broke their hands and legs. In the next term, we will break their backbone so they cannot live peacefully in Assam."
The term 'Miya' has historically been used pejoratively in Assam to refer to immigrant Muslims of Bangladeshi origin, often sparking controversy in the region's complex socio-political discourse.
Contrasting Visions for Assam's Future
Turning his attention to Congress's campaign slogan of 'Natun Bor Asom' (new greater Assam), Sarma presented a starkly different vision. "We envision our 'Bor Asom' based on the ideals of Sankardev and Sukapha, not a 'Natun Bor Asom' dominated by Bangladeshi Miyas," he emphasized, invoking revered historical and cultural figures of Assam to underscore his point.
Sarma positioned the BJP as a party working inclusively for all communities in the state. "The BJP is dedicated to serving all sections of society—Assamese, Bengali, Hindi-speaking people, Gorkhas, and tribal communities," he stated, contrasting this with his characterization of Congress's alleged exclusive focus.
Highlighting BJP's Development and Indigenous Rights Agenda
The Chief Minister also used the platform to highlight his government's achievements and future promises, particularly focusing on issues critical to indigenous communities:
- Indigenous Rights Protection: Sarma emphasized the BJP's commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of Assam's native populations.
- Land Security Measures: He pointed to policies aimed at ensuring land security for indigenous residents.
- Infrastructure Development: The CM highlighted ongoing and planned infrastructure projects across the state.
Concluding his remarks, Sarma expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) prospects, asserting that it would return to power with a strong mandate, continuing its agenda of development and community harmony in Assam.
