Assam Chief Minister Makes Shocking Murder Allegation in Assembly
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a dramatic declaration inside the state assembly, stating unequivocally that the death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg was a case of plain and simple murder. This marks the third time the CM has made such claims, having previously voiced similar suspicions on November 2 and 3, but this represents his first official statement on the matter within the legislative assembly.
SIT Investigation Intensifies with Murder Charges
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Garg's mysterious death has now formally incorporated murder charges into the case. Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was added to the case documents within just three days of the singer's passing, indicating the seriousness with which investigators are treating the matter.
Chief Minister Sarma, who also oversees the home portfolio, revealed during discussion of an adjournment motion that four to five individuals are being charged in connection with the murder. He specifically named Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta as currently jailed in relation to the case.
Comprehensive Investigation Underway with International Cooperation
The investigation has expanded significantly, with seven individuals arrested overall, including Garg's manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, cousin Sandipan Garg, and his two personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishy.
Investigators have examined 252 witnesses and seized 29 items as evidence. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought assistance from Singapore through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), with Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar personally engaging with Singaporean authorities.
Assam police visited Singapore on October 21 and received required documents from Singaporean authorities on November 4. The chargesheet is expected to be filed on December 8, after which the probe will expand to include negligence, criminal breach of trust, and other aspects.
CM Sarma promised a watertight chargesheet and warned that the motive behind the crime would shock the people of Assam. The iconic singer passed away in Singapore on September 19 while swimming, though initial reports suggested accidental death.
