Assam Completes EVM Commissioning for Upcoming Assembly Elections
The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Assam has officially confirmed that the commissioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Candidate Set for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections has been successfully completed across all 126 assembly constituencies in the state. This announcement was made on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the electoral preparation process.
Extensive Deployment of Voting Equipment
For the polls scheduled for April 9, election authorities have commissioned a substantial number of voting machines and verification systems. The deployment includes 41,320 ballot units, 43,975 control units, and 43,997 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). These figures encompass both primary machines and reserve units that will be available for deployment if required across the state's extensive network of 31,490 polling stations.
Transparent Commissioning Process
The commissioning exercise was conducted over a five-day period from March 31 to April 4 at locations specifically designated by the respective District Election Officers. According to the official media release, "The process was conducted in the presence of contesting candidates or their authorised representatives, ensuring full transparency and adherence to prescribed guidelines."
This approach guarantees that all political stakeholders had the opportunity to witness and verify the proper setup and functionality of the voting equipment, thereby enhancing confidence in the electoral process.
Technical Support and Implementation
The release further detailed that authorised engineers and technical staff from the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) provided crucial support throughout the commissioning exercise. Their expertise ensured that all EVMs and VVPAT systems were properly configured, tested, and prepared for the upcoming electoral process.
The comprehensive commissioning of voting equipment across all assembly constituencies represents a critical step in ensuring smooth and efficient elections in Assam. With all technical preparations now complete, election authorities can focus on the remaining logistical and administrative arrangements for the April 9 polls.
