Election Season Harmonizes with Bihu Festivities in Assam
The intense schedule of the election season in Assam has not dampened the festive spirit sweeping across the state. Instead, political candidates and election officials are creatively integrating the vibrant traditions of Rongali Bihu into their efforts to connect with voters, showcasing a unique blend of democracy and culture.
Bihu Troupes Deployed for Voter Awareness
In districts such as Lakhimpur, election authorities have taken an innovative approach by deploying Bihu troupes to disseminate voter awareness messages. These performances aim to encourage higher turnout on election day, using the universal language of music and dance to engage communities. The initiative reflects a strategic move to leverage cultural elements for civic education.
Candidates Embrace Bihu on the Campaign Trail
Across the Brahmaputra Valley, numerous candidates have wholeheartedly embraced the Bihu spirit during their campaigns. As preparations for the festival gain momentum, politicians are seen dancing alongside Bihu performers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and cultural pride among voters.
In Lakhimpur, BJP candidate and sitting MLA Manab Deka was observed dancing with Bihu performers in the Boginodi area. With the rhythmic beats of the dhol setting the tone, women dancers encircled Deka and his supporters, leading to an impromptu celebratory dance. "People are welcoming our campaign team with Bihu songs and dance as Rongali Bihu is fast approaching," Deka remarked, highlighting the organic nature of these interactions.
Similarly, Assam Jatiya Parishad president and opposition alliance candidate from Khowang, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, has frequently participated in Bihu dances with supporters during his extensive campaign tours in upper Assam. "Our local committees were arranging Bihu performances to welcome us. The performances reflected genuine public support," Gogoi stated, emphasizing that the dancers were not paid, indicating heartfelt backing from the community.
Administrative Efforts to Boost Voter Turnout
The Lakhimpur administration has organized Bihu-themed voter awareness campaigns specifically in areas with historically low turnout. Young girls performed Bihu dances in selected localities to convey the importance of voting. In a social media post, the district administration articulated, "As the beats of Bihu echo through every corner, let the message spread louder — Your Vote, Your Voice, Your Power. Celebrate culture, strengthen democracy."
Cultural Integrity Amid Political Campaigns
In Rangia, Congress candidate Pranjit Choudhury joined a group of children participating in a Bihu workshop, where he was seen playing the dhol as the children rehearsed. Choudhury emphasized that Bihu is intrinsic to Assamese identity, stating he was supporting the youth in preserving cultural heritage while asserting that he was not exploiting the festival for political gain.
From Manab Deka in Lakhimpur to Pranjit Choudhury in Rangia, candidates across various regions are actively participating in Bihu celebrations. This trend underscores Assam's rich cultural vibrancy, demonstrating how traditional festivities can coexist with and even enhance the democratic process, despite the rigorous demands of the election schedule.
