Violence in West Karbi Anglong Forces Churches to Cancel Night Carols, Dampens Christmas Spirit
Assam Violence Leads to Cancellation of Christmas Night Carols

The festive cheer of Christmas has been severely dimmed in the hill district of Karbi Anglong and surrounding parts of Assam following a recent outbreak of violence in West Karbi Anglong. In light of the unrest, church authorities have issued urgent advisories, calling for a subdued and cautious observance of the holiday.

Advisory for a Subdued Celebration

In direct response to the volatile situation, the United Christian Forum (UCF) of Karbi Anglong district has issued a significant appeal to all churches. The forum has strongly advised against organizing traditional night-time Christmas carols and any celebrations outside church premises after dark. This guidance aligns with the prohibitory orders currently in effect across the region, which restrict public gatherings.

The district, which is home to a significant Christian community estimated at 16 to 18 percent of the population and over 300 churches of various denominations, is now preparing for a somber holiday season. The UCF's appeal explicitly encourages churches to schedule any celebration programs well before nightfall and for families to remain safely at home after dark, avoiding travel until further notice.

Root of the Unrest: Clashes Over Eviction

The tension erupted on Tuesday when a protest led by Karbi tribal groups demanding the eviction of non-tribals from VGR and PGR lands turned violent. The clashes, which involved stone-throwing between groups in Kheroni, resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals. This incident has cast a long shadow over the region, heightening apprehensions during what is typically a joyous period.

Allen Brooks, the spokesperson for UCF Assam, voiced deep concern over the impact. "The Karbi Anglong incident has dampened the celebration mood in Assam. Apprehensions are there. So we are very much concerned about the situation this Christmas," he stated.

A Call for Peace and Reflection

The official appeal from UCF Karbi Anglong emphasizes strict adherence to the prohibitory order issued under section 163 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) due to the violence. Beyond logistical changes, the forum has made a heartfelt plea for peace and introspection.

The appeal calls for restraint from making any inflammatory remarks and urges the community to dedicate prayers for peace and harmony. It reframes the essence of Christmas, stating, "Whatever the situation, Christmas is a time of reflection about restoring relationships with God and with one another, and much more than merry-making, music, and feasting. Let the peace and joy of Christmas fill every heart and home."

In a separate public message, the UCF also appealed to all citizens of West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong to shun further violence and escalation. It advocated for any protests to be conducted strictly through democratic and peaceful means to ensure public safety for all residents.
