Baddi Shopkeeper Booked for Unlawful Possession of Protected Indian-Roofed Turtles
In a significant crackdown on illegal wildlife activities, a shopkeeper from Baddi in Solan district has been arrested for unlawfully keeping protected Indian-roofed turtles in captivity. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about wildlife trafficking and animal welfare in the region.
Police Action Initiated by Social Media Complaint
The Baddi police registered an FIR and took Charanjit Arora, owner of Arora Communications, into custody after he was found in possession of two Indian-roofed turtles. This species is safeguarded under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making such possession a serious offense.
The operation was triggered by a complaint received via social media from Sahil Sharma, an environmentalist and wildlife rescuer based in Rajpura, Punjab. Sharma, known for his efforts in rescuing and protecting wildlife, promptly alerted authorities after verifying the information.
Rescue Operation and Veterinary Examination
Upon receiving the complaint, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vikalp Yadav deputed Range Officer Negi to assist in the operation. A team swiftly reached the location and confirmed Arora's illegal possession of the turtles.
The rescued turtles were kept in highly unsuitable conditions within a small aquarium, lacking essential provisions such as basking space and UV light. As a result, both animals exhibited visible signs of health deterioration, including shell-related infections. One turtle was a juvenile, only a few months old, while the other was an adult estimated to be around 10 years of age.
Following the arrest, the police sent the turtles for a thorough veterinary examination to assess their health and provide necessary care. This step underscores the importance of proper rehabilitation for rescued wildlife.
