Political activity in the Bagalkot assembly constituency has surged dramatically following the closure of nominations on Monday. Both the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are escalating their efforts to consolidate voter support in this high-stakes by-election.
Key Candidates and Strategies
The Congress party, determined to retain the seat previously held by late MLA HY Meti, has placed its faith in political newcomer Umesh Meti, the son of the deceased legislator. The party is banking heavily on sympathy votes and the legacy of the Meti family to secure victory.
In contrast, the BJP has opted for experience, nominating seasoned leader Veeranna Charantimath, a former three-time MLA who is contesting for the sixth time. The party aims to reclaim the constituency through his established political network and grassroots appeal.

The enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, triggered by the election notification, has set the administrative machinery into full motion. The district election office has implemented a series of measures to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
March 26 marks the final date for withdrawal of candidatures, while polling is scheduled for April 9. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, determining the outcome of this closely watched contest.
Women Electorate Emerges as Decisive Factor
A pivotal aspect of this by-election is the demographic advantage held by women voters. According to the final electoral roll published on February 14, the Bagalkot assembly constituency boasts a total of 259,260 registered voters.

- 60 flying squads
- 24 check-posts
- 72 static surveillance teams
- 22 video surveillance teams
First-level checking of electronic voting infrastructure has been completed, covering 535 control units, 523 ballot units, and 517 VVPAT machines. Voter awareness initiatives are actively educating citizens on the use of EVMs and VVPAT systems.
Authorities are encouraging the public to report any violations of the Model Code of Conduct through the cVIGIL mobile application, enhancing transparency and accountability.
Tight Vigil to Curb Electoral Malpractices
In a bid to prevent the illegal movement of cash, liquor, and other inducements, 24 check-posts have been established at strategic locations across constituencies including Mudhol, Terdal, Jamkhandi, Bilgi, Badami, and Bagalkot itself. Key entry and exit points are under round-the-clock surveillance to deter any unlawful activities.
