Ballari Municipal Engineer Assault Sparks Protests and Political Row
Tensions flared in Ballari on Friday after an assistant executive engineer of the municipal corporation was allegedly assaulted during a ward-level programme, triggering widespread protests by civic staff and igniting a significant political controversy. The incident occurred during the 'Salam Ballari' outreach event led by MLA Nara Bharat Reddy on April 3, where GM Veeresh, serving as in-charge AEE, was reportedly attacked by Congress corporator V Kuber.
Root Cause: Dispute Over Encroachment Clearance
The alleged assault is said to have stemmed from a heated dispute over delays in removing an encroachment on Infantry Road. A temporary structure had been erected on a footpath, and disagreements over the clearance timeline escalated into a verbal altercation that allegedly turned physical. According to officials, the confrontation intensified rapidly, leading to the reported attack on Veeresh.
Following the incident, Veeresh was admitted to the district hospital for treatment and later filed a formal complaint at the Brucepet police station. An FIR was registered in the evening, and police have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.
Municipal Staff Protests and Civic Disruption
The assault triggered immediate and strong protests by municipal officers and staff, who staged a demonstration outside the corporation headquarters. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the corporator and warned of an indefinite agitation if their demands were not met. They also threatened to boycott essential civic services, which could severely impact daily operations in the city.
Municipal commissioner PS Manjunath condemned the incident, highlighting that the corporation is already functioning with limited staff and under considerable pressure. He assured that the matter would be reported to the district administration for further action.
Political Reactions and Support
The protest received significant support from BJP functionaries and corporators, adding a political dimension to the incident. MLC YM Satish criticised the assault, stating that repeated such incidents were damaging the city's image. He warned of intensified protests if timely action is not taken against the accused.
MLA Nara Bharat Reddy, who led the outreach programme, said he had earlier intervened to defuse a verbal altercation between the two individuals but learned of the alleged assault only after leaving the venue. He called the attack unacceptable and assured a detailed inquiry, promising action against those found responsible.
Official Condemnation and Accountability Demands
Senior district officials, including DC Nagendra Prasad K and ADC Mohammed Zuber, visited the injured officer at the hospital to assess his condition and show support. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various organisations, increasing pressure on authorities to ensure accountability and safeguard government officials while on duty.
This event underscores ongoing tensions in municipal governance and highlights the need for stricter measures to protect public servants from such assaults in the future.
