Trinamool Leader Accuses Election Officials of Bias in Nandigram Campaign

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee launched a fiery campaign in Nandigram on Sunday, making explosive allegations against election officials and the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a rally that drew significant attention, Banerjee claimed he did not know the identity of BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari's official election agent but suggested it might be Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal.

Direct Challenge to BJP and Election Machinery

"But I challenge you, neither your election agent Manoj Agarwal nor Amit Shah's election agent Gyanesh Kumar can help you or BJP win Nandigram or Bengal," Banerjee declared to the assembled crowd. He specifically pointed to Agarwal's activities on April 7, alleging the CEO had campaigned for Adhikari alongside BJP supporters in several locations.

The Trinamool leader connected this to broader patterns of what he described as institutional pressure, stating, "They are sending notices to TMC cadre through NIA and CBI, and CEO is coming for campaigning." This dual approach of investigative agency actions combined with alleged partisan behavior by election officials formed the core of his critique.

Call for Resistance Against Intimidation

Addressing supporters who might feel threatened by these developments, Banerjee offered reassurance and a call to action. "Those who are being threatened, don't be scared. If they scare you now, they will continue to do it regularly over five years," he warned, framing the current moment as a precedent for future governance.

He emphasized the power of collective resistance, particularly highlighting the role of women voters. "You will have to form resistance. Gyanesh Kumar does not have the right to take away your voting rights. If mothers and sisters choose the path of resistance, TMC will win here with a margin of over 25,000 votes," Banerjee asserted, drawing a clear distinction between West Bengal and states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Contrasting Development with Religious Politics

Banerjee positioned the election as a fundamental choice between competing visions. "Those who do politics over religion are politically bankrupt. Our focus is on education, shelter, food and development," he stated, directly criticizing what he characterized as BJP's approach.

He contrasted this with specific examples of local issues, noting, "I have seen it on social media, when people complain about the poor condition of roads, he (Adhikari) speaks of religion." This critique extended to cultural and historical dimensions, as Banerjee referenced Bengal's resistance to British rule while criticizing what he saw as contemporary subservience.

"The soil that didn't bow down to the British...two days back I witnessed a person of the same soil bowing down at the feet of Yogi Adityanath," he remarked, adding allegations about disrespect to Bengali icons like Vidyasagar and Swami Vivekananda.

Promising Concrete Development Benefits

Shifting from criticism to positive agenda, Banerjee outlined specific benefits for Nandigram if Trinamool candidate Pabitra Kar emerges victorious. "This poll is about development vs misrule. If Pabitra Kar wins from here, you will get a bridge over Haldi river and 30,000 people will get funds under Banglar Bari," he promised, connecting electoral outcomes to tangible infrastructure and housing benefits.

The rally thus presented a multi-faceted argument: allegations of institutional bias, calls for voter resistance, criticism of religious politics, and promises of developmental rewards. Banerjee's remarks reflect the intense political competition in Nandigram, a constituency that has gained national significance in recent election cycles.
