Banyan Tree Falls on Kerala School, No Injuries

Kottayam: A large, decades-old banyan tree collapsed onto the Government Higher Secondary School at Koodal in Pathanamthitta early Monday morning, driven by strong winds. The falling tree damaged a portion of the tin-sheeted roof, the parapet, and a toilet of the school building. However, a major disaster was narrowly avoided as students had not yet arrived for the day.

Swift Response by Emergency Services

Fire and rescue services personnel promptly arrived at the scene and, with the assistance of local residents, cut the tree into sections and removed it from the premises. The operation was completed without any further incident, ensuring the safety of the area.

Residents’ Allegations and Prior Warnings

Local residents have alleged that they repeatedly requested the district panchayat authorities to cut down the dangerous tree, but their pleas were ignored due to a reported lack of funds. The education department had also issued strict directives to remove hazardous trees on school premises to prevent such accidents. Despite these warnings, the tree remained standing until it fell.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of neglected infrastructure and safety measures in educational institutions. The quick action of the fire services and community members prevented what could have been a tragic event. Authorities are now expected to review the safety of other trees on school grounds to avoid future risks.
