Kottayam: A massive decades-old banyan tree collapsed onto the building of the Government Higher Secondary School at Koodal in Pathanamthitta district early Monday morning, triggered by strong winds. The incident caused damage to a section of the tin-sheeted roof, the parapet, and a toilet. However, a potential major disaster was avoided as students had not yet arrived at the school premises.
Response and Removal
Fire and rescue services personnel, with the assistance of local residents, promptly cut the fallen tree into pieces and removed it from the site. The swift action ensured the safety of the building and prevented further damage.
Allegations of Negligence
Local residents have alleged that they repeatedly requested the district panchayat authorities to cut down the dangerous tree, but the authorities hesitated, citing a lack of funds. The education department had also issued strict orders to remove hazardous trees on school premises to prevent such incidents. The delay in action has raised concerns about the prioritization of safety in public institutions.
