Opposition Stages Walkout in Belagavi Council Meeting Over Agenda Transparency
The general body meeting of the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) on Saturday witnessed significant political drama as members of the opposition Congress party staged a dramatic walkout. The walkout occurred amid allegations that the meeting's agenda was not provided to council members before proceedings began, sparking protests and heated exchanges.
Congress Protests Agenda Transparency Issues
Congress members expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of transparency in the meeting's organization. They alleged that the complete agenda was not shared with opposition members prior to the meeting's commencement, making it difficult for them to prepare adequately for discussions on critical civic matters.
"We will continue our protest until we receive justice and proper procedural fairness," declared Congress representatives, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring transparent governance practices within the municipal corporation.
BJP Passes Unanimous Condemnation Resolution
Amid the opposition walkout, ruling BJP members seized the opportunity to pass a unanimous condemnation resolution targeting the Congress party's political stance. The resolution specifically opposed what BJP members characterized as Congress's policy of not supporting the Nari Shakti Bill in Parliament.
MLA Abhay Patil criticized Congress members for what he described as "a very indifferent attitude towards development issues." He further stated, "They boycotted the Lok Sabha without supporting the Nari Shakti Bill. The same pattern of obstructionism has manifested here in our municipal proceedings as well."
Key Civic Issues Discussed Amid Political Tensions
Despite the political confrontations, the meeting addressed several important civic matters affecting Belagavi residents:
- Property Registration Corruption: Council member Sandeep Jiragyal raised serious concerns about alleged massive corruption in e-property registration processes. He demanded a thorough investigation and strict punishment for guilty officials. His concerns received support from corporators Veena Srishail Bijapur and former deputy mayor Vani Joshi.
- Memorial Transfer Issues: Discussions centered on the proposed handover of freedom fighter Gangadhar Rao Deshpande's memorial and the BUDA-developed Ramateerthnagar area to BCC management. Deputy mayor Hanumant Kongali suggested alternative arrangements, recommending that the Kannada & culture department assume maintenance responsibility for Deshpande Sabha Bhavan rather than transferring it to BCC.
- Media Accountability: The council decided to submit a memorandum through the information department demanding action against a Marathi daily newspaper. The publication had run a story on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary under the headline 'A heartfelt tribute to Ambedkar,' which some members found objectionable. Corporator Shrishail Kamble insisted that "strict action should be taken against those who insulted Ambedkar."
Official Presence and Meeting Conduct
The meeting was conducted with several key officials in attendance, including Mayor Preeti Kamkar, BCC Commissioner M Kartik, and senior officials Siddu Hulloli, Laxmi Nippanikar, UdayKumar Talwar, and Anand Deshpande. Their presence underscored the importance of the discussions despite the political disagreements that dominated portions of the proceedings.
The walkout and subsequent developments highlight ongoing tensions between ruling and opposition parties in Belagavi's municipal governance, with procedural transparency and political ideologies emerging as central points of contention during Saturday's council meeting.
