A trained camp elephant created scenes of panic and chaos in Gundlupet town on Tuesday after a sudden bee attack caused the animal to run amok through busy streets and commercial areas.
The Chaotic Incident Unfolds
The incident occurred around 11:30 AM on June 25 when Dhananjay, a 25-year-old male elephant used in jungle camps, was being bathed near the inspection bungalow in Gundlupet. According to forest department officials, a swarm of bees suddenly attacked the elephant, causing the otherwise calm animal to panic and break free from its handlers.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes as the massive elephant charged through the town's main areas, including BM Road and surrounding commercial establishments. The elephant's unexpected rampage sent pedestrians and shopkeepers scrambling for safety as the animal knocked over several vehicles and damaged property in its path.
Emergency Response and Capture Operation
Forest department officials immediately launched an emergency operation to control the situation. Deputy Range Forest Officer Manjunath led the response team that pursued the elephant through the town.
After nearly an hour of coordinated efforts, the forest department team successfully administered a tranquilizer dart to calm the agitated animal. The sedated elephant was then safely secured and transported back to camp facilities for monitoring and care.
Aftermath and Official Statements
While the incident caused significant property damage to vehicles and some shop fronts, no human casualties or serious injuries were reported. Local business owners and residents expressed relief that the situation was brought under control without loss of life.
