Commuters in Karnataka's Belagavi district are once again facing the nightmare of navigating dilapidated bridges, especially during the monsoon season. With floodwaters frequently submerging these unsafe structures, residents are forced to either risk dangerous crossings or take lengthy detours, adding hours to their daily commutes.
Ongoing Construction at Lolasur Bridge
The Lolasur Bridge on the outskirts of Gokak is one such structure where construction work is still ongoing. Despite being a vital link for local traffic, the project has faced repeated delays, leaving the bridge in a partially built state. This has exacerbated the woes of commuters, who have no alternative but to use the crumbling infrastructure.
Decades of Neglect
Many bridges in the region have not seen significant repairs or upgrades for decades. The lack of maintenance has led to structural weaknesses, making them particularly vulnerable during heavy rains. As a result, when floodwaters rise, these bridges become impassable, cutting off entire communities and disrupting economic activities.
Long Detours and Safety Risks
Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of timely action. “We have to either risk our lives crossing these broken bridges or travel an extra 20 kilometers to reach the other side,” said a local commuter. The detours not only waste time but also increase fuel costs, adding to the financial burden on families.
Government Response
While local authorities have acknowledged the issue, progress on repairs and new construction has been slow. Officials cite funding constraints and administrative hurdles as reasons for the delays. However, with the monsoon season already underway, the urgency for action has never been greater.
Demand for Immediate Action
Community leaders and activists are demanding that the state government prioritize the repair and reconstruction of these bridges. They argue that the safety and economic well-being of thousands of residents depend on reliable infrastructure. Without swift intervention, the situation is likely to worsen, leading to potential accidents and further isolation of rural areas.
As the rains continue, the people of Belagavi remain hopeful that their long-standing demands will finally be heard and acted upon.
