Bengaluru Family's Desperation Over Debts Leads to Fatal Suicide Attempt
In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, a family in Bengaluru's Mallenahalli area near Attibele in Anekal taluk attempted suicide late Saturday night, driven by overwhelming financial pressures. Officials confirmed on Sunday that two members died on the spot, while two others are fighting for their lives in hospital, highlighting a desperate situation fueled by mounting debts and health struggles.
Incident Details and Timeline
The heartbreaking event occurred between 10 pm and 10:30 pm on Saturday at the family's residence. Relatives and preliminary police reports suggest that persistent harassment by creditors may have compelled the family to take this extreme step. Neighbors, who heard distressing sounds from the house, gathered and found the main door locked from inside. Upon breaking it open, they discovered the grim scene: Asha (55) and her daughter Varshitha (32) dead, while Mohan MR (26) and his 11-year-old nephew Mayank were critically injured and screaming in pain.
The injured were immediately rushed to a private hospital in Attibele, where they are currently undergoing emergency medical care. Police were alerted, and a case has been registered at the Attibele police station in Bengaluru Rural district, with further investigation ongoing to uncover all details surrounding this tragedy.
Video Message Reveals Family's Distress
In a chilling prelude to the incident, police revealed that the family had recorded a video message before the tragedy, explicitly stating their inability to bear the pressure from lenders and their intention to take an extreme step. This video was shared with relatives, who, alarmed by its content, rushed to the house only to confirm the worst: Asha and Varshitha were unresponsive, adding a layer of premeditation to the desperate act.
Financial Stress and Health Struggles Compounded
Preliminary investigations point to a combination of severe financial distress and health issues as key factors. Mohan, involved in a chit fund business, was reportedly overwhelmed by financial losses, which may have led him to attack Asha, Varshitha, and Mayank with a knife, slitting their throats before attempting to take his own life in a similar manner. Both survivors sustained severe injuries and are receiving intensive treatment.
Further inquiries uncovered that Varshitha had been battling a brain tumour for over a year and a half and was in critical condition. The family had accumulated significant debt for her medical treatment, compounded by the chit fund business losses, creating an insurmountable burden. This dual crisis of health and finance likely exacerbated their distress, pushing them toward this tragic outcome.
Community and Police Response
The incident has drawn attention to the severe impacts of debt and creditor harassment in urban areas like Bengaluru. Police are continuing their investigation to understand the full scope of the financial pressures and any external factors involved. Relatives and neighbors expressed shock and sorrow, emphasizing the need for support systems to prevent such desperate measures in the future.
As the community mourns, this case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden struggles many families face, urging greater awareness and intervention in cases of financial and emotional distress.
