LPG Black Market Crisis Grips Bhopal: Cylinders Sold at Double Official Rates
The city of Bhopal is currently grappling with a severe disruption in its daily life due to rampant black marketing of liquefied petroleum gas cylinders. This illegal activity is pushing households, hotels, and restaurants into a deepening crisis, with prices skyrocketing far beyond official rates.
Exorbitant Prices for Commercial Cylinders
The 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder, which is officially priced at Rs 1,800, is being illegally sold in the black market for an astonishing Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000. This represents more than a double increase, placing an immense financial strain on businesses that rely heavily on these cylinders for their operations.
Domestic Cylinders Also Affected
Similarly, domestic 14.2-kg cylinders, which should cost Rs 918 as per government regulations, are being diverted and sold for as much as Rs 2,000. The sharp rise in these unofficial prices has created a heavy burden on families across the city, who depend on LPG for their daily cooking and other essential needs.
Impact on Residents and Small Businesses
The crisis has forced many residents to pay exorbitant amounts out of desperation. One resident from the Arera Colony area shared their plight, stating, "I had to buy a cylinder overpriced as the agency was not ready to deliver. I had no other option left in such a situation." This sentiment echoes across Bhopal, where the lack of reliable supply has left people with few alternatives.
Small businesses, particularly hotels and restaurants, are facing operational challenges as the inflated costs cut into their margins, threatening their sustainability. The black market's grip on the LPG supply chain is not only a financial issue but also a logistical one, disrupting the normal flow of essential resources.
Broader Implications
This situation highlights a significant failure in the distribution and regulation of LPG in Bhopal. Authorities are urged to take immediate action to curb these illegal practices and restore order to the market. Until then, the residents and businesses of Bhopal continue to bear the brunt of this escalating crisis, with daily life becoming increasingly difficult.
