The city of Bhopal is poised for a transformative leap in urban mobility as the much-anticipated Bhopal Metro is set to begin passenger services, with an inaugural ceremony likely to be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 13. In a celebratory move, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) will offer free rides to all commuters for the entire first week, allowing residents to experience the state capital's first modern rapid transit system at no cost.
Inauguration and the Free Ride Celebration
Officials have confirmed that all necessary clearances, including the crucial Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approval, have been secured, paving the way for operations. A senior MPMRCL official stated that the week of free travel is intended to give citizens a hands-on opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new service and its facilities. This strategy mirrors the successful launch of the Indore Metro earlier this year. Passenger services will commence immediately after the inauguration ceremony on the same day.
Operational Details and Affordable Fares
Following the inaugural free travel period, the metro will implement a highly affordable fare structure. Fares will start at just Rs 10 for short journeys and go up to Rs 20 for trips spanning approximately eight kilometres. In its initial phase, the metro will operate daily between 8 am and 8 pm, with trains arriving every 30 minutes. The fleet for the priority corridor consists of 10 modern three-coach trains, each with a capacity to carry 750 passengers. Initially, two trains will be deployed to manage passenger demand, running at an average speed of 30 kmph.
Designed for Safety and Inclusivity
The Bhopal Metro has been designed with a strong emphasis on safety and universal accessibility, reflecting a commitment to inclusive urban development. Key passenger-friendly features include:
- Braille-enabled coaches for visually impaired commuters.
- Dedicated and priority seating for differently-abled passengers.

This launch marks the operational start of the priority corridor connecting Subhash Nagar to AIIMS Bhopal.
